Intel Launches 7th-Gen 'Kaby Lake' Core Processors for Laptops and 2-in-1s

Intel has formally launched its first wave of 7th-generation Core processors, better known by their codename Kaby Lake. Today's launches are CPUs in the U and Y series, which are intended for thin and light portables such as notebooks and 2-in-1s. Processors for mainstream and enthusiast desktop PCs, beefier laptops, workstations, and other categories will be refreshed early next year.
Intel will now emphasise the "7th Generation" branding in its marketing materials, especially the stickers that manufacturers place on their products. The Core m5 and Core m7 names for ultra-low-power CPUs have also been deprecated after being introduced only last year - Intel will continue to use Core m3, but products corresponding to the previous higher tiers will be sold as Core i7 and Core i5 regardless of whether they are regular or low-power processors.

Synology DiskStation DS716+II

The DS716+II comes with two Gigabit Ethernet ports at the back, which offer redundancy in case one of the links goes down, a feature that will definitely be appreciated by the enterprise users. You also get two USB 3.0 ports at the back, and an eSATA port as well. The rear also features the reset button, a Kensington Security Slot to keep the unit secure, and of course the power port and the fan.
Apart from the two drive bays, each of which has a drive status indicator LED of its own, the front has a status indicator that gives you an idea of the overall health of the NAS unit. Below that there are the two LAN indicators, with the power button at the bottom right of the front side of the unit. In between, you have a USB 3.0 port and a copy button, which lights up when you connect a USB drive or a camera, and can be used to copy data from the connected device to the Synology unit.
We moved our two drives from the DS215j to the DS716+II by following simple instructions on the Synology website. Between our previous review and now, Synology pushed a big software update to most of its NAS units in the form of DMS 6.0, which brings a bunch of new features and enhancements.

Asus ROG G20CB

The ROG G20CB is certainly unique in terms of its shape and size. It doesn't use any standard PC form factor, and Asus is one of the very few companies that can fabricate all the parts it needs to pull this off. It isn't quite small-form-factor either; Asus says the total volume is 9.5 litres, whereas mini-ITX PCs tend to be between 14 and 28 litres, but the shape is highly irregular. Its design is angular and bold, stopping just short of being aggressive. It can only be stood up vertically, which might be a problem for those looking for an unobtrusive living room PC.

The first thing you'll notice about it is the tribal pattern on the front and top. It's all plastic, and serves the dual purposes of ventilation and looks. There's RGB LED lighting which shines through when the unit is switched on. The ROG G20CB is sure to be noticed no matter how or where you place it.

Inside Zen: How AMD designed its powerful new processor

AMD knew it needed to make radical changes in its Zen CPU chip to become a force in the PC and server markets again. So when the chip designers sat down four years ago to etch out the Zen design, they had two things in mind: to drive up CPU performance as much as possible and to keep power efficiency stable. The company ultimately settled for a 40 percent improvement in Zen over its predecessor, Excavator.“We had a hard time convincing the team we were going for 40 percent,” said Mike Clark, a senior fellow at AMD. “It was a very aggressive goal, and we knew we had to do it to be competitive.”AMD first promoted the 40 percent CPU improvement goal when it introduced Zen in 2015 during an overhaul of its chip roadmap.

If benchmarks of PCs with Zen hold, a 40 percent boost in CPU performance will be a radical improvement compared to low-double digit improvements claimed by Intel and AMD in recent x86 chips.

Acer Aspire S13

The MacBook Air has been the gold standard for ultrabooks almost since its unveiling. At the time it launched, it was the only thin, light and solidly built ultrabook around with decent specifications. Today however, there is a plethora of powerful, gorgeous devices to choose from.
Acer’s Aspire S13 is one such device. It’s slim, light, well-built and more powerful than the Air; it’s also more expensive

First things first. This laptop is thin, very light and looks rather nice. It’s meant to be a business laptop and the muted black finish does help with that image. The entire device seems to be made of metal, though the lid does have a coating of some sort of plastic.

The ZenBook 3 is the latest salvo fired against Apple's very popular MacBook Air and MacBook ultra-portable laptops, and Asus says it is thinner than the MacBook Air, yet faster than the MacBook.

Other highlight features of the ZenBook 3 according to Asus are that it sports the world's thinnest fan at 3mm; has an 82 percent screen to body ratio; bears a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 panel, and is claimed to have a 9-hour battery life that's coupled with quick charging - 60 percent charge can be achieved in 49 minutes. The laptop also features a gold-backlit keyboard with "twice the key travel" of the MacBook. It weighs in at 910 grams, measures 11.9mm in thickness, and sports a fingerprint reader. Intel Announces Project Alloy 'Merged Reality' Headset; Microsoft to Release Holographic Display Support for Windows 10
Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced what the company is calling "merged reality" experiences during the opening keynote of the 2016 Intel Developers' Forum event in San Francisco Tuesday. Merged reality envisions an immersive world that users can walk around and interact with as if they are physically present and participating in the scene, as delivered by a fully self-contained headset developed under the name "Project Alloy".
The Project Alloy headset does not need to be tethered to a PC, allowing users the freedom of walking around and moving on all six axes. If a user gets too close to a real-world object such as a wall or another person, it will pop into the scene, allowing him or her to avoid it. Users manipulate objects in the virtual world directly, negating the need for hand-held controllers. External sensing hardware is partially or fully replaced with Intel RealSense 3D cameras within the headset.
